Description

Identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients by utilizing the Cancer Registry data system. Analyzes registry data and disseminates information in accordance with professional ethics. Coordinates hospital cancer program activities.
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associate's degree in Health Information Technology required and
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management preferred
Experience
  • 2 years related medical record or oncology experience, preferably in a hospital setting preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification required or
  • eligibility for RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) certification preferred and
  • CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) within 1 year of hire required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of various computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, data abstracting programs, and conventional medical record coding systems.
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Assists researchers conducting cancer-related studies and research projects, provides guidance in the use of the Cancer registry data system including creating and preparing reports. Works with the registry system vendor and IS to obtain data not available in the report writer.
  • Contacts physicians and patients on a regular basis to obtain follow-up information. Meets all quality, timeliness and productivity standards for follow-up as defined by the Administrator.
  • Maintains unit as survey ready and in accordance with AJCC staging guidelines and ACoS standards.
  • Coordinates activities of the cancer registry with those of the Cancer Committee and Tumor Board in developing criteria for patient care evaluations. Abstracts for and assists Medical Staff in conducting PCE studies and collating information for reports.
  • Creates and prepares statistical reports for medical and hospital staff or committees; presents reports either verbally or in writing; coordinates preparation and data to be included in Cancer Program annual report and prepares report for publication. Meets annual deadline for preparation of the annual report.
  • Establishes policies and procedures for the unit as required for effective functioning of registry. Assists in developing, obtaining approval and maintaining Medical Staff policies required for Accreditation by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS).
  • Identifies cases of malignant diseases, stages, and assists physicians with AJCC staging, abstracts and codes. Meets all quality, timeliness and productivity standards for abstracting as required for both personal and unit work.
  • Maintains an acceptable unit follow-up rate relevant to the age of the registry and as required by ACoS, hospital and Medical Staff management.

  • Supports Cancer Committee, Tumor Board and other cancer conference activities by selecting cases for presentation, preparing agendas, minutes and attendance records (within two days of the meeting) and by preparing data for distribution at the meetings. Prepares registry update reports as requested.
  • Works with the public and community relations departments by participating in planning meetings and events; represents the hospital in community outreach efforts related to the Cancer Program.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
