As a CNA, you will function as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities in the obstetrical services/maternal and newborn areas under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical providers. Assists nursing and medical staff with procedures and/or tests and patients with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living). Performs specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) and Foley Catheter insertions, external fetal monitoring (EFM), and documentation in the health record.

Primary Duties:
· Provides direct patient care activities under supervision. Assists patients with ADLs and personal hygiene (e.g., bathing, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, and range of motion activities). Assists with patient mobilization and transfer from/to bed. Collects specimens; performs venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtains EKGs; and inserts intravenous (IV) catheters, changes of IV sites and dressings, and inspection of IV sites; applies oxygen equipment (e.g., nasal cannula and face mask). Assists in the measurement and documentation of patient's vital signs, height and weight, pulse oximetry, intake, and output (I&O), point of care and waived testing (i.e., finger sticks for glucose monitoring/Accucheck, urine dipstick), etc. Performs routine treatments/activities including Foley Catheter insertion and removal; simple dressing changes and wound care; turning and positioning; oxygen administration; application of external fetal monitoring equipment (EFM); and postmortem care.
· Assists the nursing staff/provider with preparations and/or examinations/procedures. Acts as scrub assistant during OR surgical procedures (i.e., c-section) and assists in vaginal deliveries. Prepares instruments, supplies, etc. Assists in counting sterile instruments/sets. Breaks down LDR's, OR, and Nursery treatment areas immediately after procedures are completed including the collection, removal and appropriate disposal of dirty linen, trash, body fluids, and contaminated instruments. Cleans and maintains all specialized equipment such as fetal monitors, infant warmers, machines, and surgical instruments.
· Maintains the comfort, confidentiality, and dignity of each patient. Performs patient observation duty, including 1:1 observation. Prepares patients to be seen by providers. Assists in patient examinations and procedures. Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients/families, including changes in the patient's condition/symptoms, to the registered nurse and care team. Initiates and assists in CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation).
· Participates in patient/family teaching (e.g., proper use of crutches and walkers) and responds to questions from patients, families, and visitors promptly, referring them to appropriate personnel if necessary. Maintains the cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment by distributing and changing linen, removing used meal trays, checking bed/stretcher siderails and safety restraints, etc. Assists with environmental services support (e.g., linen management, trash removal and cleaning). Maintains orderliness of the utility, storage, nourishment, and nursing station areas.
· Transports and/or escorts patients during discharges, transfers, and/or medical appointments. Completes errands such as delivering specimens to the laboratory, equipment, and supplies, etc. Orders necessary supplies to maintain par levels. Receives and stocks equipment and supplies and maintains orderly supply and utility rooms. Checks sterile supplies for sterility integrity. Restocks supplies in patient rooms.
Qualifications:
· High School Diploma or GED.
· Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program.
· 1-2 years' experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
· CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant in Maryland
· BLS (Basic Life Support).
· CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) preferred.
· Experience as a care technician or surgical scrub/technician preferred.
· General health care experience in acute care, long-term care, maternal/newborn, etc. preferred.
· Student nurse in junior or senior year preferred.
