Job Summary:
MedStar Health is looking for a Psychiatric Transfer Specialist to join our team at MedStar Franklin Square Hospital.The ideal candidate will possess administrative experience, including a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software, and interpersonal and organizational skills.
As a Psychiatric Transfer Specialist, you will provide direct support for MedStar Behavioral Health call service, manage all calls on the toll-free number, plan, and coordinate with the participating inpatient units: bed assignments, acceptance/denial, registration, admitting for psychiatric patients referred for inpatient psychiatric admission, prioritizing patient referrals to inpatient psychiatric units from participating MedStar facilities. Coordinates completion of patient review and disposition and insurance exchange with sending facility for clinical review and authorization.

Primary Duties:
Manages the day-to-day call center communications to and from referral sources both internal and external to MedStar Health. Answers calls received on the toll-free number by routing callers, taking messages, and providing information, as appropriate.
Using critical thinking, assigns beds for potential admissions to a participating MedStar inpatient unit based on patient's needs, current presentation, and unit capability. Responds to all referral inquiries concerning current, past, and potential patients. Communicates information to appropriate parties on a timely basis.
Maintains accurate record keeping using department approved electronic logs to ensure timely retrieval of information. Continually documents updates and information about patient's referral cycle, from the first call to the patient's disposition. Complies with and ensures adherence to documentation standards that maintain patient privacy and remains confidential in nature throughout the entire process.
Communicates frequently during the day with the Nurse reviewer/ Transfer Coordinator/ patient's care team to ensure continuous coordination and expedite patient's transfer. Serves as liaison for all referral sources, outside agencies, and other interested parties as appropriate and within limits of confidentiality.
Uses highly confidential data processed by the department and makes on the spot decisions using personal knowledge of hospital policy and behavioral health specialty knowledge.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.
1-2 years' experience with direct inpatient/outpatient behavioral health or relevant experience.
