General Summary of Position
Serves as resource technologist and performs routine and specialized assays and provides technical advice and information in one or more of several clinical laboratory scientific specialties to provide data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Analyzes body fluids, cells and products to identify abnormal and critical disorders associated with disease processes. Serves as a knowledge expert and technical consultant in the specialty area(s).  This role is PRN, hours and shift availability may vary based on operation needs.  


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and specialized laboratory testing in assigned area.
  • Correlates laboratory findings with disease states. Integrates and relates data from other laboratory specialty areas and confirms abnormal results and specimen discrepancies. Institutes correct follow-up procedures.
  • Troubleshoots technical problems pertaining to collection of specimen, laboratory data and instrumentation. Determines cause and directs corrective action in accordance with guidelines and procedures.
  • Monitors and reviews daily quality control and assurance measures to confirm that tolerance limits are not exceeded. Implements corrective actions for quality control/quality assurance problems. Evaluates CAP and other survey (proficiency testing) material as required.
  • Coordinates and conducts lab instruction. Evaluates student and employee technical performance as required.
  • Calibrates, performs, and documents preventative maintenance on equipment and instruments. Performs advanced troubleshooting on instrumentation. Identifies sources of repair.
  • Participates in continuing education by attending relevant workshops, in-services, or town meetings to accumulate 6-10 documented CE hours/year; presents 1-2 in-services.
  • Keeps work area in a clean and organized manner at all times in keeping with the lean standards as designed. Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments, computers, telephones and general work area according to laboratory protocol.
  • Demonstrates simple/complex troubleshooting skills and adheres to QC and maintenance schedule.
  • Provides accurate direction, assistance, and appropriate communication
  • Submits 1-2 occurrence reports that may lead to a process improvement, generates realistic suggestions regarding processing issues and helps with the implementation of the improvement.
  • Resolves most difficult technical problems independently
  • Demonstrates no more than 1 documented Category A or B (major) error.
  • Demonstrates no more than 10 documented Category C (minor) errors.
  • Participates in the education and training of students and new employees as assigned by supervisory personnel.
  • Performs all duties according to the standard work procedure.
  • Notifies Supervisory personnel of any issues in a timely manner. Report issues that arise that may impair the performance of the LEAN Workflow Procedure. Suggest ways to resolve.
  • Performs workflow audit thorough LEAN Assessments when scheduled to do so. Report completed audit results without delay to supervisory personnel with suggestions for improvement.
  • Adhere to the pre-determined lunch/break schedule, unless otherwise instructed, to ensure adequate coverage of work area so that productivity levels are not compromised.
  • Maintains adequate reagents/supplies in the work area and/or on the instruments to avoid delay in sample processing.
  • As Tech-in-charge, understands and can utilize LEAN Metrics and staff schedules to adjust staffing patterns to match workflow on a real-time basis.
  • Performs special projects and technical research to evaluate new methodologies, assays and instruments. Assists in updating procedural manuals as required.
  • In the event of absence, assumes the duties of the Technical Specialist.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field required or
    • Master's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field required or
    • Doctoral degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field required or
    • Doctoral degree in Medicine required

    Experience

    • 1-2 years of progressively more responsible clinical laboratory experience for Bachelor's degree holders. required
    • One year of clinical laboratory experience is sufficient for applicants with a M.D degree, or Master's or PhD degree

    Licenses and Certifications

    • ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist certification required
    • The ASCP certification is waived if applicant has a minimum of seven years of experience in a designated specialty, or holds a M.D., Master or PhD degree


    This position has a hiring range of $41.98 - $75.62
