Schedule:
Part-time: 24 hours per week
2 shifts per week, rotating weekends and holidays
Shift: 10:00 AM – 10:30 PM

⚠ Permanent position only – Seasonal or temporary candidates will not be considered.

Position Summary
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the Patient Care Technician (PCT) assists in providing individualized patient care to support the patient's highest level of wellness. This role is an essential part of the healthcare team and requires strong collaboration, clinical judgment, and a commitment to quality care. Position Details: Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform daily hygiene and personal care measures
  • Assist with routine activities including ambulation, turning and repositioning patients
  • Ensure dietary needs are met, including feeding assistance and intake documentation
  • Observe skin integrity and utilize appropriate supplies to prevent breakdown
  • Gather and document patient data (e.g., vital signs) in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Prepare and maintain patient charts for admissions, discharges, and transfers
  • Perform point-of-care testing or specimen collection as assigned (e.g., glucose monitoring)
  • Observe and report changes in patient condition promptly to appropriate personnel
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team to optimize patient care
  • Assist with patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and personal belongings
  • Perform clerical duties as needed (answering phones, monitoring call lights)
  • Demonstrate effective time management, flexibility, and sound clinical judgment
  • Maintain required certifications, competencies, and eLearning assignments
  • Demonstrate responsible stewardship of resources and accurate charge documentation
Advanced Patient Care Skills (with Required Training/Competency)

PCTs may perform advanced patient care duties requiring additional education and competency validation, including but not limited to:

  • Blood cultures
  • Enteral tube feedings
  • Non-sterile wound care and dressing changes
  • IV removal
  • Suture tray and pelvic exam setup
  • Chest tube setup
  • Visual acuity assessment
  • Burn dressing changes and debridement
  • Handheld Bovie pens
  • Whirlpool baths for wound care
Competencies Not Permitted in Oklahoma (Unless AUA-Certified)

The following duties are not allowed in the state of Oklahoma unless the employee has completed the Oklahoma State AUA Program:

  • Phlebotomy
  • Staple removal
  • Donning/doffing sterile gloves
  • Creating or maintaining a sterile field
  • Trach care or suctioning (closed or open systems)
  • Removal of indwelling urinary catheters (male/female)
  • Urinary catheter specimen collection via luer-lock port
  • Sterile wound dressing changes
  • IV initiation (only permitted in select departments per state regulations)

Other duties as assigned.

Safety & Risk Management
  • Follow all Mercy policies related to safety, confidentiality, and patient rights
  • Practice proper infection prevention and control techniques
  • Support a safe patient environment, including fall prevention and restraint management
  • Adhere to patient identification and unit-specific safety policies
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care
Technology
  • Utilize unit-specific technology platforms (computers, pagers, phones, Rover, etc.) to perform daily tasks and maintain effective communication
Qualifications

Education (Required):

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • CNA/CPCT certification OR enrollment in a healthcare career program through high school OR current Mercy coworker

Training Requirement (If No Prior Experience):

  • Completion of a 175-hour Mercy-provided training program, meeting Department of Health and Senior Services requirements
  • Training completed during new-hire orientation and must be finished within 90 days of hire

Certifications:

  • BLS required within 1 month of hire
  • Completion of PCT competencies within 3 months of hire
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Prolonged standing and walking throughout shifts
  • Ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat routinely
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education/Licensure: CNA, EMT, CPCT, or AUA (state of practice)
  • Experience: EMT, Paramedic, or prior patient care experience
