Position Summary
The Technology and Digital Strategy Lead is a critical leadership role within Norfolk Southern's technology organization, reporting to the AVP, Technology and Digital Strategy. This role is designed for a highly strategic thinker with strong execution skills, responsible for shaping and driving key digital and technology initiatives.
We are seeking candidates with a management consulting background (e.g., McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, Accenture, or similar firms) who have advised Fortune 500 companies on technology strategy, digital transformation, and IT operating models. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in both business and technology, with a track record of influencing senior leaders and executing strategic programs in complex, matrixed environments
Responsibilities
Technology Strategy & Digital Transformation:
- Develop and execute enterprise-wide technology and digital strategies, ensuring alignment with business goals and operational priorities
- Partner with business and IT leaders to define roadmaps, drive consensus, and translate strategic objectives into actionable initiatives.
- Define priorities and sequencing for cloud adoption, infrastructure modernization, AI/automation, and other strategic technology investments.
- Shape the future-state product and platforms oriented operating model, including governance structures, sourcing strategies, and capability development.
Emerging Technology & Innovation:
- Identify and evaluate emerging technology trends (e.g., AI, cloud, IoT, data analytics) and develop strategies to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience.
- Partner with innovation and business teams to pilot and scale digital initiatives.
- Build relationships with external technology partners, startups, and academia to explore co-innovation opportunities.
Program and Change Management:
- Provide strategic oversight for large-scale technology programs, ensuring they deliver measurable business impact
- Implement best-in-class program governance, ensuring clear accountability, risk management, and measurable business outcomes.
- Support change management efforts to drive adoption of new technologies and ways of working across the organization
Executive Communication: Prepare and present recommendations, business cases, and technology strategies to senior business and technology executives
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field required; MBA or Master's in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: 5-10+ years of experience, with at least 3+ years in management consulting (e.g., McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, Accenture, etc.) focused on technology strategy and digital transformations.
- Strong track record of working with CIOs, CTOs, and business leaders to define and implement enterprise technology strategies.
- Expertise in IT operating models, enterprise architecture, cloud transformation, AI/automation, and digital innovation.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams and large-scale transformation programs.
- Deep understanding of emerging technologies and their impact on business models and operations.
- Proven ability to influence and collaborate at the executive level.
Skills Preferred
- Experience in the transportation, logistics, or B2B industrial sectors is a plus.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and executive communication skills.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive structured problem-solving in complex environments.
- In-depth knowledge of the technology landscape and experience navigating large, matrixed environments.
