At NorthBay Health, the Bariatric Surgery Program Coordinator – Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for coordinating and clinically supporting an MBSAQIP-accredited Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Center of Excellence. This role ensures continuous compliance with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practice while delivering advanced clinical care to bariatric patients across the continuum.

Working directly with the MBS Director, the Bariatric Coordinator NP provides clinical leadership, oversees program operations, supports quality improvement initiatives, data oversight, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration and serves as a subject matter expert for bariatric care delivery.

The NP Coordinator serves as a key liaison across NorthBay Health departments and collaborates with the metabolic and weight loss program to support seamless patient navigation throughout the continuum of care (pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative). The coordinator also collaborates with others as appropriate to support program initiatives, education, and quality improvement activities.

In addition to program coordination responsibilities, Bariatric NP functions in an advanced practice role consistent with state scope of practice and organizational privileges. The NP provides comprehensive clinical care to bariatric patients, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management in both pre-operative and post-operative settings including long-term bariatric follow-up while coordinating multidisciplinary care across departments.

                          PRIMARY JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Accreditation, Regulatory Compliance, and Program Oversight

  1. Collaborates with the MBS Medical Director to maintain continuous compliance with MBSAQIP standards, Joint Commission (or equivalent), and applicable federal and state regulations.

  2. Serves as the designated liaison between the center and MBSAQIP, ensuring timely communication, documentation, and readiness for site visits.

  3. Actively participates in all MBSAQIP site visits and accreditation reviews for the center.

  4. Maintains knowledge of accreditation criteria, regulatory standards, and organizational policies and serves as a resource to staff and leadership.

  5. Leads development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of policies, pathways, and protocols aligned with evidence-based practice.

  6. Serves as a liaison between the facility and all metabolic and bariatric surgeons providing call coverage M-Fri between the hours of 8a.m. to 5p.m.

  7. Assists in maintaining documentation of surgeon call schedules and ensures accessibility to departments involved in bariatric patient care

  8. Collaborates as required to support operational planning and workflow optimization.

  9. Fosters collegial, collaborative relationships across departments and disciplines.

  10. Maintains confidentiality of all related program information.

  11. Demonstrates accountability for professional practice and advanced practice standards.

  12. Participates in committees, task forces, and work groups as assigned.

  13. Facilitates the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Committee, including preparation of agendas, documentation of minutes, and follow-up on action items.

  14. Attends at least two of the three required MBS Committee meetings annually, including the annual comprehensive review meeting, and majority of other meetings.

  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Quality Improvement and Data Management

  1. Oversees bariatric program data collection processes and verifies that data are accurate and consistent with patients' medical records.

  2. Monitors outcomes data, quality indicators, and performance metrics to support patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.

  3. Collaborates with manager and program leadership to support planning, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement project initiatives.

  4. Works closely with the MBS Clinical Reviewer to ensure timely and accurate submission of data to the MBSAQIP Registry.

  5. Identifies clinic and operational trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement and supports corrective action planning. 

 

Patient Navigation and Coordination of Care

  1. Provides clinical oversight and supports patient navigation across pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative bariatric care. and maintains deep knowledge of bariatric care pathways to ensure continuity, consistency, and coordination of care.

  2. Supports patient navigation across NorthBay Health services and coordinates care with the metabolic and weight loss program and other relevant departments and and maintains deep knowledge of bariatric care pathways to ensure continuity, consistency, and coordination of care.

  3. Provides education and counseling to patients, families, and caregivers related to bariatric surgery, treatment plans, and available resources.

  4. Partners with patients, families, interdisciplinary teams, and community resources to deliver coordinated, timely, and patient-centered care.

  5. Communicates patient needs, concerns, and care coordination issues to appropriate members of the healthcare team.

  6. Identifies patient safety risks and supports implementation of practices to reduce harm. 

 

Advanced Practice (Nurse Practitioner-Specific Responsibilities)

  1. Conducts comprehensive patient assessments, including history, physical examination, and risk stratification for bariatric surgical candidates.

  2. Diagnoses and manages obesity-related conditions and post-operative complications within NP scope of practice.

  3. Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests and laboratory studies.

  4. Prescribes medications and therapeutic interventions in accordance with licensure, credentialing, and collaborative practice agreements.

  5. Performs outpatient clinic visits, including pre-operative clearance, post-operative follow-ups, and longitudinal bariatric care management.

  6. Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia, nutrition, behavioral health, and other specialists to optimize patient outcomes.

  7. Documents clinical encounters accurately and timely in the electronic health record.

  8. Supports compliant billing, coding, and documentation practices for NP-provided services.



Qualifications

  1. Education: RN Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

  2. Licensure/ Certification: Current California licensure as a Nurse Practitioner and Board Certification by the American Nurse Credentialing Center, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, or Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Maintains a current DEA license for schedule 2 drugs and above. Maintains a current Furnishing Number for medications. Eligible for credentialing and privileging, Bariatric, obesity medicine, or specialty certification preferred.

  3. Experience: Three years of experience in a bariatric program and/or MBSAQIP-accredited Center of Excellence highly preferred. Previous experience serving as a Bariatric Surgery (BS) Coordinator or Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Coordinator preferred. Experience supporting accreditation, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, outcomes data collection, or clinical program coordination (required). Experience in bariatric case management preferred. Experience working collaboratively with physicians and interdisciplinary teams in a bariatric or surgical specialty setting preferred.

  6. Hours: M-F 8-5 based on business need.

  7. Compensation: $98 to $119 per hour based on years of experience doing the duties of this role.
