At NorthBay Health, The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Supervisor reports to the SPD Manager and plays a key role in supporting growing surgical services, and centralized instrument processing. This position provides daily operational leadership across NorthBay Medical Center (NBMC), Vacaville Hospital (VVH), and the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant reprocessing of surgical instruments.  This role is responsible for supervising staff, overseeing workflow, maintaining regulatory compliance, promoting quality improvement, and supporting system-wide patient care objectives.

 

The SPD Supervisor oversees sterile processing technicians and manages all aspects of decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, instrument tracking, and distribution.  This role ensures adherence to regulatory and accreditation requirements including AAMI, AORN, CDC, FDA, CMS, and The Joint Commission.  This role collaborates with OR, Infection Prevention, Supply Chain, and clinical partners to support safe, high-quality patient care system wide. 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES
  • Staff receive timely direction and support; workflow is consistently maintained without delays or safety concerns.

  • Supervisory presence is effective and fosters teamwork, professionalism, and patient-centered focus. 

  • Schedules are posted on time, accurately reflect staffing needs, and minimize use of overtime or last-minute coverage changes.

  • Attendance and productivity trends are monitored and addressed promptly.

  • 100% of staff competencies and evaluations are completed by required due dates.

  • Performance issues are addressed constructively and documented appropriately.

  • Instrument tracking system (ITS) data is accurate with zero unlogged trays or undocumented steps.

  • All required documentation is completed, and errors are addressed immediately.

  • Quality indicators are monitored, with all failed loads or deficiencies investigated, resolved, and properly documented.

  • Reduce surgery delays due to SPD-related issues.

  • Communication is proactive, solutions-focused, and enhances interdepartmental relationships.

  • Safety protocols, hazardous waste procedures, and PPE compliance are consistently followed.

  • Serves as a role model, maintains a positive work environment, and actively engages in staff education and team development.



Qualifications

  1. Education:  High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a formalized training program in Sterile Processing Technician or Surgical technology preferred.

  2. License/Certification: National Sterile Processing Technician Certification through CBSPD or HSPA required. National GI Flexible Scope Reprocessing Certification through CBSPD required. Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) preferred. 

  3. Experience: Five (5) years hospital Sterile Processing or Operating Room with computer experience preferred. Must have 3 years of experience in GI Flexible scope reprocessing.

  4. Skills:  Infection prevention and safety Must demonstrate knowledge of infection prevention practices, safety controls, and quality assurance monitoring, including the interpretation of biological indicators, Bowie-Dick tests, sterilization and high-level disinfection (HLD) records. Ability to lead a team while adhering to facility safety policies and procedures, including protocols for bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases.

  6. Compensation:  $35.57 - $43.22 Max rate listed is commensurate of 20+ years of experience in role.
