Position: Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

Position FTE: .625

Pay Grade: 10

Starting Wage: $21.28-$25.98, +$5 premium pay

Days Per Year: 202

Shift hours: 8:45 - 1:45pm, 5 hours/day

Specific job responsibilities relevant for this position include: Will provide speech-language therapy services to individuals or in a group setting under the supervision of a Speech Language Pathologist.

Title:  Speech Language Pathologist Assistant
  Band Grade Subgrade Department: Accountable to: FLSA Status: Student Support Services SSS Director & Asst. Director Non-Exempt

Class Summary:  The Licensed Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) administers direct and indirect intervention for students under the direction and supervision of a licensed or certified (through the State of Alaska/ Department of Education and Early Development) Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in the provision of clinical educational services for students with speech-language disorders and/or communication disorders.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics:   Perform duties that are instructional/therapeutic in nature or deliver direct services to students under the direction of the supervising SLP.  These services are direct, individual, group therapy, and indirect therapy in the form of consultation and monitoring.  Must possess or have applied for a license in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
  Duty No. Essential Duties Frequency Band/Grade 1 Provide direct treatment to students identified by and following documented treatment plans or protocols as directed by the supervising SLP or Audiologist. 50-75% 2 Direct teaching staff and parents with specific methods and practices to implement therapy plans under the direction of the supervising SLP As Needed 3 Collaborate with SLP regarding student status, abilities, and progress toward the IEP goals. Weekly 5% 4 Assist the SLP with documentation during an intervention or assessment session. As Required 5 Schedule activities, prepare and maintain charts, records, graphs or other displays of data. 5% Weekly 6 Organize and manage student data and records; perform clerical duties, such as scheduling of appointments,  the set-up of materials for diagnostic and intervention sessions; 50-75% Weekly 7 Attend IEP meetings, staff, intervention, and team meetings as directed by the supervising SLP.  Immediately inform the supervising SLP of all communications/requests or concerns by parents, staff and/or administrators. 5% Weekly 8 Perform other duties as assigned by supervising SLP; As Required 9 Perform checks and maintenance of equipment/materials  Such as AT devices (i.e.: Go talk, board maker, touch screens, dynavox, laureate voice program…etc) 5% Weekly 10 Attend 15 hours of continuing education hours every two years as stipulate in the State of Alaska Licensing requirements through professional development training. As Required

 
Knowledge:   Recognize when changes in a student's needs require assistance from the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist; Give input to the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) regarding the assessment and evaluation of students, when requested; Review IEP put in place by the multi-disciplinary team, which includes the SLP. Therapy is delivered in accordance with the goals and objectives set forth in the IEP and as prescribed by the supervising SLP.
 
Skills (position requirements at entry):   Successful completion of the competency-based checklist examination from the Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant Registration Application Packet through the Alaska Division of Occupational Licensing.
 
Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):  Completion of 100 hours of verified field work supervised by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist required. Experience working in a public school system preferred.
 
Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry):  Completion of an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Disabilities with a Speech/Language Support Emphasis or a Bachelor's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited institution, and possession of a State of Alaska Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant license required.                                                                   
 *Note: Individuals who were employed in a position of Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant as defined in AS 08.11.042  for at least one year preceding July 1, 2004, that includes the practice of Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant as defined in AS 08.11.042 may qualify for registration as an SLPA  were registered as an SLPA by meeting the requirements for a “transitional license”.
 
Physical Requirements:  Light Work:  Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work
 
Job Summary: Applicants must be Highly Qualified by the end of their probationary period. Must posses or have applied for a license in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.


*Highly Qualified means you have met the paraprofessional requirements as defined by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).  
The NCLB minimum requirements for paraprofessionals are defined in NCLB Sections 1119(f) and 1119(c)(1) as:

High school diploma or GED
AND
Two years of college (at least 48-semester hour credits); or
Associate's (or higher) degree; or
Pass the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist.


It is the responsibility of the applicant to list the specifications of being Highly Qualified in their application and to furnish supporting documentation to the District.
 


IMPORTANT:  If the method of obtaining Highly Qualified status is an Associates Degree or Higher, or 48 semester hours or equivalent then the following applies:
Transcripts from the University/College attended are required to verify highly qualified status for hire. We prefer official transcripts, however we will accept unofficial transcripts if they are in a comprehensible format provided by the university/college and contain all information necessary for determining that all the requirements for meeting highly qualified status have been satisfied.
