Description

The Automation Applications Engineer is responsible for developing conceptual automation solutions, evaluating application feasibility, supporting application testing, and developing equipment and component pricing for custom automation projects. This role will work closely with the Applications Engineering and Sales teams to translate customer requirements into practical automation solutions. The ideal candidate has a working knowledge of industrial automation, robotics, conveyors, machine components, and manufacturing processes, with the ability to understand an application at the system level without needing to be an expert in every discipline. The position is approximately 50% conceptual design and layout, 25% application evaluation and testing, and 25% pricing and estimating. As experience and technical proficiency develop, the Automation Applications Engineer will take on increasing responsibility for customer scope development, solution selection, and complete system pricing. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop quick-turn 2D and 3D conceptual designs for custom automation equipment and end-of-line packaging applications.
  • Create conceptual equipment layouts and system arrangements using SolidWorks and DraftSight.
  • Review customer application information including product dimensions, weights, rates, pallet patterns, operating requirements, and other relevant specifications.
  • Evaluate applications against IRIS standard equipment and determine the most appropriate solution.
  • Identify application limitations, risks, missing information, and potential engineering challenges.
  • Obtain and maintain current pricing for purchased components, fabricated items, and application-specific equipment.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to obtain quotations for custom components and equipment.
  • Work with internal engineering and operations personnel to understand fabrication, assembly, engineering, controls, and labor requirements when developing project costs.
  • Review and compile customer application and scope information required for quotation.
  • Assist with gathering dimensions, specifications, product information, operating requirements, and other application details.
  • Coordinate with equipment and component vendors to obtain technical information, availability, and pricing.
  • Develop relationships with key suppliers and maintain familiarity with commonly used automation components.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3–7 years of experience in industrial automation, applications engineering, machine building, packaging automation, robotics, or a related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks and/or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Working knowledge of DraftSight, AutoCAD, or similar 2D CAD software.
  • Ability to work independently while knowing when to seek input from more experienced engineering personnel.
  • Willingness and ability to work hands-on with automation equipment for measurements, testing, and application validation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of industrial automation equipment and concepts, including:
    • Industrial and/or collaborative robotics
    • Conveyors and material handling
    • Pneumatic systems
    • Machine components and mechanisms
    • Machine guarding and safety concepts
    • Basic electrical and controls concepts
  • Previous experience with robotic automation or end-of-line packaging equipment.
  • Experience working for an automation machine builder, systems integrator, OEM, or similar organization.
