Summary:

The Dietitian-WIC Outpatient participates in the implementation of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Grant and Nutrition Program Services: Medical Nutrition Therapy, Lactation, and community nutrition education events for patients, individuals, families, programs and population groups with the focus on assessment, education, prevention, risk reduction and treatment for nutrition and health status improvement. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams in order to achieve desirable outcomes.  Continuation of this position is contingent upon funding allocations. 

Responsibilities:

The Dietitian-WIC/Outpatient performs the following essential functions within the framework of the Public Health Core Competencies (PHCC) and the State of Wisconsin WIC Program Grant. These duties and responsibilities are not an all-inclusive list but rather a general representation of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position. The duties and responsibilities will be subject to change based on organizational needs and/or deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Data Analytical and Assessment Skills

  • Utilize data in the promotion of nutrition health and wellness: qualitative, quantitative, primary, and secondary.
  • Contribute to the community health assessment process. Actively participate in performance management to include quality assurance/improvement (QA/QI) activities. 

Policy Development and Program Planning Skills

  • Implement Wisconsin WIC Operations Manual policies and procedure, as required.
  • Perform objectives in the WIC Nutrition Services Work-plan, as assigned.
  • Participate in department Strategic Plan and strategic direction team activities. 
  • Contribute to policy and procedure implementation, evaluation, and improvement strategies in order to meet program grand requirements. 

Communication Skills

  • Communicate effectively in the English language to individuals and groups, both verbally and in writing.  
  • Practice excellent customer service skills to include but not limited to addressing customer and employee needs courteously and promptly.
  •  Use professional communication skills including active listening, clear, concise, positive messaging, and maintain patient confidentiality requirements. 
  • Provide professional evidence-based nutrition -related education and program services including, handouts, displays, newsletters, social media content, presentations, or events for individuals and groups. 
  • Participate in regular staff meetings to ensure that clear communication is maintained within the department and between staff. 
  • Prepare timely and concise monthly reports of activities for supervisors to include projects, trainings, concerns, suggestions, and client or event data. 
  • Operate business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software.

  • Apply principles of ethics, diversity, equity, inclusion, and fairness when providing services and interacting with clients, co-workers and community partners. 
  • Develop and provide nutrition education services that include Oneida Nation culture, tradition, values, and are trauma informed. 
  • Comply with Civil Rights and Nondiscrimination/Equal Opportunity policies as required by WIC Program and USDA federal guidelines.

  • Develop new relationships and maintain current contacts with local/regional peers, professionals, partners and community organizations for referrals and program collaboration.

  • Apply the WIC Program Standards of Care for quality, culturally appropriate, person-centered education, and evidence-based nutrition and lactation services.
  • Utilize the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Nutrition Care Process (NCP) for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) when performing patient health screening, nutrition risk assessment, education and treatment, food prescriptions, referrals, and documentation of care.
  • Seek out and utilize evidence- based resources and best-practices in offering nutrition education and program services. 

Management and Finance Skills

  • Engage in individual l professional development opportunities relating to nutrition, Public Health, and trauma informed care. 
  • Actively support the Mission, Vision and/or Strategic Plan and objectives for department, Health Division, and Oneida Nation. 
  • Follow purchasing processes and budget guidelines in requests for program supplies, services, and training.

Leadership and Systems Thinking Skills

  • Contribute to team efforts with peers and partners for innovative and quality nutrition, lactation, health and wellness, or disease prevention community educational programs and events.
  • Participate in professional continuing education activities, as required to maintain credentials.
  • Provide professional mentoring to students using direct observation, assistance and feedback for performance success and rotation assignments.
  • Adhere to all Tribal Personnel Policies and Procedures, Tribal Standard Operating Procedures, and Area and Program Strategic Plans and Policies.
