Description

The Data Center Facilities Engineer will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and operating the Mechanical plant and Power Generation systems in the data center locations.

Level four escalation point of contact for Data Center technologies and related Mechanical and Power Generation devices.  Participates in largest projects to design and implement Mechanical and Electrical improvements to data centers.

This positions primary focus will be on ensuring optimal environmental conditions for the efficient and reliable operation of the data center infrastructure.  Additionally, they will develop procedures to outline data center Mechanical and Power Generation processes and related tasks.

This individual will lead the design and engineering of the Mechanical plant and Power Generation data center technologies and future datacenter related initiatives. Mentors Data Center Operations team members and helps increase their effectiveness and skillset on Mechanical and Power Generation related systems.  Key contributor and driver of important, challenging and high-visibility projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as Subject Matter Expert and level four support for the operation and maintenance of the Data Center Mechanical and Power Generation systems
  • Leads projects assigned to Data Center Team
  • Leads projects for opportunities for improvement and architecture changes.
  • Leads large projects related to data center design, construction and certifications
  • Leads large projects related to data center design and architecture.
  • Leads large projects related to data center construction and design to achieve Uptime Institute Data Center Tier levels.
  • Leads opportunities for improvement in Mechanical and Power Generation architecture changes.
  • Develops and implements strategies to ensure proper power, cooling and other capacity needs.
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of the Mechanical plant and Power Generation systems within the data center facility.
  • Monitor and analyze environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity, and airflow, using specialized tools and equipment.
  • As required must be available on a 24-hour basis for emergency support.  Only when required and considered abnormal to general operations.
  • Collaborate with other teams to schedule and coordinate maintenance activities to minimize impact on data center operations.
  • Establishes specifications by conferring with users; analyzing workflow, access, information, and security requirements.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.
  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Documentation:

  • Documents specific duties, activities, problems solved and issues resolved.
  • Document all maintenance and repair activities accurately and maintain records of equipment performance and service history.

Miscellaneous:

  • Attends meetings and serves on committees, as requested.
  • Regular attendance as required.
  • Performs additional duties and assignments as requested.


Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree/Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred or completion of formal trade/technical school or requisite years of experience

Experience:

  • Minimum 15 years of related experience
  • Experience in training individuals in day to day operations

Certification: (One of the following Preferred)

  • Licensed Mechanical Technician
  • Licensed Mechanical Plant Technician (Boilers, Plumber, Pipe Fitter)
  • Power Generation Technician
  • High Voltage Training/Safety

Advanced Knowledge of:

  • Datacenter cooling technologies
  • Mechanical Plant equipment expertise:
  • Chillers
  • Cooling Tower
  • Pumps
  • Filters
  • Water Treatment
  • BMS/Automation Controls setup and diagnosis
  • Equipment commissioning and setup
  • VFD controls for water pumps
  • Align Pumps and Motors
  • PID adjustment for motor and pumps
  • Data Center Power Generation, Switchgear, UPS, Generator Operations
  • Experience with hand tools
  • General knowledge of datacenter design and construction
  • Emerging Technology Trends
  • Datacenter Best Practice and Industry Standard Methodology

Skills/Abilities:

  • Evaluate critical systems, prioritize workflow and determine solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interpret and apply laws, regulations and policies
  • Competent computer skills, including proficiency in relevant software applications like Office and Sunbird products.
  • Brazing and soldering experience in sensitive environments.
  • Read and understand technical manuals
  • Work for extended time at keyboard/terminal
  • Maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and coworkers
  • Work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings
  • Value open, honest communication
  • Eager to be transparent and truthful as a primary matter of course
