Position Summary The Enterprise Systems Architect serves as the top-level technical authority for the team and ensures all solutions align with VA enterprise strategy, DoDAF/UAF standards, and the SAFe Architectural Runway. This role bridges enterprise-level direction with product-level execution across a complex portfolio of VA supply chain systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and maintenance of AS-IS and TO-BE Architecture Models using VA-prescribed enterprise architecture formats (DoDAF, UAF) across the HELM Product Line
- Build and maintain the HELM-wide SAFe Architectural Runway, defining shared technical foundations, architectural enablers, integration points, and cross-product capabilities; update quarterly prior to each PI
- Develop Solution Architecture Packages encompassing business, systems, application, and data architectures for new features and capabilities
- Ensure all solution architectures align with VA's enterprise strategy, roadmap, and Technical Reference Model
- Lead architectural assessments to identify reuse opportunities, alignment with Enterprise Architecture, and compatibility with Product Line standards
- Establish and maintain a HELM Architecture Repository within VA-approved tools, including vetted design patterns, reusable components, solution templates, and interface patterns
- Provide technical guidance on FHIR, ESB/EAI patterns, API integration, and VA-specific interoperability requirements
- Support DevSecOps maturity assessments and document compliance gaps and technical readiness
- Develop and maintain current architecture diagrams (logical, network, dataflow) updated each release
- Ensure ATO compliance is considered in all architectural decisions; support A&A artifact development
- Advise on cloud architecture (AWS, Azure, VAEC/Platform One) and cloud migration strategies
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, or related field; Master's preferred and 13 years of experience.
- 10+ years of enterprise architecture experience in large-scale federal IT programs
- Demonstrated experience with DoDAF and/or UAF architecture frameworks
- Proficiency with SAFe Agile framework, including Architectural Runway and PI Planning
- Experience with VA or federal health IT systems (VistA, Oracle Health EHR, iFAMS, MVI, Lighthouse) strongly preferred
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, VAEC) and cloud-native architecture patterns
- Knowledge of FHIR, ESB/EAI integration frameworks, and API engineering
- Familiarity with VA TRM, NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, FedRAMP, and VA Directive 6500
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Public Trust and must be US-based

- Certified SAFe Architect (ARCH)
- Red Hat Certified Engineer in Cloud-Native Applications
- AWS Solutions Architect or Azure Solutions Architect
- CISSP
