Job Description:
A Technical Writer III develops, writes, and edits technical documentation in support of program and customer requirements. This role produces clear, accurate materials such as:
- Technical manuals and user guides
- Installation, operation, and maintenance manuals
- Test procedures and work instructions
- Reports, briefs, and proposals
- Catalogs and other technical/administrative publications
This is a senior-level technical writer role with leadership responsibilities. Technical Writer III will serve as the lead for all F3113 technical writing efforts, owning documentation standards, schedules, and deliverables across the contract. This position works on-site at the SAIC Eastgate facility in Bedford, Indiana, five days per week, and closely partners with engineers, technicians, project leads, and government customers to understand systems, equipment, and processes, and to translate that information into high-quality technical documentation.
Job duties:

Develop, write, and edit technical content for manuals, procedures, reports, and other deliverables in accordance with applicable standards, templates, and contract requirements.

Leading small teams with delegating tasking, checking work and documenting completed work in technical documents, processes, and reporting to program manager and government task lead.
- Observe production, developmental, test, and experimental activities to capture accurate operating procedures and technical details.

Consult with engineering, production, test, and field personnel to collect source information.

Review and interpret technical source material including:

Blueprints, sketches, and engineering drawings.

Schematics, parts lists, and specifications.

Technical reports, and other reference documents.

Organize complex technical material into clear, logical structures and complete writing assignments that meet standards for order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.

Edit and standardize content prepared by engineers, technicians, and other staff to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with style and formatting guidelines.

Use Adobe FrameMaker as a primary authoring tool to create, format, and maintain structured technical manuals and other documentation.

Select and coordinate graphics (photographs, drawings, diagrams, charts) to support and clarify technical content.

Assist with layout, formatting, and preparation of documents for publication and distribution (electronic and/or hard copy).
Maintain records, version histories, and configuration control of documentation and revisions.
Job Responsibilities:

Serve as the primary technical writing lead for the F3113 contract, responsible for all documentation across supported programs.

Oversee documentation schedules and deadlines; track progress and ensure all technical writing deliverables are completed on time and to quality standards.

Attend and represent SAIC at all technical writing meetings with government customers, capturing requirements, feedback, and action items.

Coordinate with project and program leads to align documentation priorities with overall program milestones and customer expectations.

Provide training, guidance, and mentoring to lower-level technical writers, including:

Teaching templates, standards, and style guides.

Reviewing and providing feedback on draft documents.

Helping junior writers improve clarity, accuracy, and consistency.

Help define and maintain documentation standards, templates, and style guides for F3113.

Act as the central point of contact for technical writing questions and issues across the contract.
Qualifications
Required education and experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
5+ years of experience in technical writing, documentation, or related technical communication support (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Hands-on experience with Adobe FrameMaker creating and maintaining technical manuals or similar structured documentation.
Demonstrated experience developing technical documentation from engineering source data (drawings, schematics, parts lists, etc.) and/or direct observation of systems and equipment.
Strong written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical information in a clear, concise, and user‑friendly format.
Experience working with subject matter experts (SMEs) and cross-functional teams to gather information and resolve discrepancies.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow templates, style guides, and documentation standards.
Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize work, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated leadership in documentation – owning document sets, coordinating documentation schedules, or guiding other writers on standards and quality.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Secret security clearance needed to start.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with project leads, engineers, writers, and the customer.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's or bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, or related field.
Experience with additional documentation tools (e.g., Arbortext, Adobe Acrobat, Visio, SnagIt, or similar).
Experience with configuration management/version control for documentation.
Experience working with MIL-STDs, government documentation requirements, or similar standards.
Prior experience training or mentoring junior technical writers.
