Position Summary:

The Design Engineer I is responsible for developing and implementing simple to moderately complex new product designs and improving legacy products as assigned. Responsibilities also include completing analyses to support design decisions. This entry-level position in the R&D department is generally intended for relatively recent graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. The Design Engineer I works both independently and in a team environment with Designers, Design Engineers, Project Managers, and Test Technicians.  Occasional collaboration with other departments including manufacturing, QC, and assembly is expected.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop innovative mechanical part designs which meet product requirements.
  • Generate functionally dimensioned, ASME Y14.5 compliant drawings including GD&T in SolidWorks.
  • Adjust designs based upon tolerance stack analyses to ensure functionality.
  • Assist in QAP identification.
  • With minor assistance, complete basic level analyses using one or more of the following tools: FEA, Motion, CFD, heat transfer or other software.
  • Process change orders through the PLM system for the release and revision of parts & assemblies.
  • With assistance, generate logical and thorough test plans to evaluate new or modified product features or parts.
  • Work with Test Technicians to complete testing as needed.
  • Compile and analyze test data.
  • Contribute to the generation of test reports and recommendations.
  • Generate drawings with dimensioning, tolerancing, and datum structures which are optimized for both part functionality and ease of inspection.
  • Participate in design for manufacturability reviews with teammates, manufacturing engineers, and vendors.
  • Develop and manage Intellectual Property through patent searches, patent applications, and trade studies.
  • Provide technical assistance to other departments within Sig Sauer as needed.
  • Consistently follow safe firearm handling practices.
  • Follow all range safety procedures when in any of the range areas.
  • Engages in and actively volunteers for Continuous Improvement projects/tasks.
  • Participates in and sustains 5S
  • Must follow all required ISO procedures, comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements, and adhere to SIG SAUER, Inc. security mandates.
  • Must be able to travel
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education/Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 0-3 years of engineering experience in a R&D environment is preferred (direct employment, co-op, or internship).
  • Must be proficient using CAD software to create parametric solid models and associated drawings (SolidWorks highly preferred).
  • Must be familiar with fundamental mechanical engineering skills including static, FEA, kinematic and dynamic motion, CFD, and/or heat transfer analyses.
  • Must be able to generate clear, fully dimensioned, ASME Y14.5 compliant drawings of complex parts.
  • Must be familiar with GD&T symbology.
  • Must be able to create functional designs supported with multi-part tolerance stack analyses.
  • Must be familiar with basic mechanical assembly and be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must be able to convey ideas and information clearly, concisely, and accurately to others, both verbally and in written form.
  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • A basic understanding of manufacturing methods including machining, metal injection molding, plastic injection molding, stamping/fine blanking, extrusion, forging, and casting as well as knowledge in material selection, heat treatment and coatings is preferred.
  • Experience using and maintaining firearms and/or related products is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be.

Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. Security Mandates.
