The General Manager (GM) for our Phoenix facility supports the vision of Smyth by building sustainable results and maximizing the potential of our employees. The GM must exude a mindset of excellence and winning through talent by working collaboratively in process execution, driving effectiveness, and leveraging our business redundancies to meet customer expectations. The GM must drive clarity of expectations, create empowerment with each interaction, while effectively leading, directing, and coaching to actions which enable operational excellence, not only for their facility, but across Smyth.

Key responsibilities include:

 

Leadership & Development: Define the structure and required staffing levels to obtain optimum efficiency and customer-focused outcomes for Smyth Companies. Source, hire, engage and retain team members to meet the needs of the business. Ensure individual and team education and training programs are in place to deliver success. Provides clear and consistent communication methodologies are in place to enable engagement, team building, and a positive work environment. Manage the performance of team members to ensure expectations are met with exceptional customer service is delivered. 

Operations Management: Ensure effective and efficient operations to deliver operational excellence. Maintain the physical condition and appearance which reflects the standards of safety, quality, and service of our business. Be collaborative within the facility as well as Corporate teams to ensure best practice sharing.  

Financial Accountability: Drive operational excellence, and provide tools, processes, and structure for the location to meet their P&L objectives. Enable, inform and monitor KPIs across the Division. Drive and support workflow assessments and recommendations for improvements as necessary. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations. 

Engagement: Be an employer of choice in the community. Create an environment where all employees are expected to be active, contributing members of the business. Hold the team accountable to values, principles, and goals. Recognize successes and challenge people to be better than they thought possible. Create opportunities for growth and development. Ensure an inclusive environment that is representative of the local market.  

Efficient and Effective: Lead continuous improvement efforts focused on Lean Methodologies. Drive sustainability through training, control documents, and audits. Participate in Lean events and lead daily improvement projects. Lead the implementation and sustainment of standard work, 5s, and mistake-proofing in assigned areas. Engage in quality processes ensuring root cause analysis and action planning. Lead by example, coach, and mentor the team members on continuously improving processes.   

Customer Focus: Champion the business unit strategy by staying focused on customer needs, such as effective, on-time delivery of goods and services. Use business capabilities and human capital resources to be a customer advocate. Enable and drive speed to market, creating customer delight. 

 

Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Required: Minimum associate's degree from a college or technical school; four-year degree preferred
  • Required: 8+ years' experience in a leadership role
  • Required: 5+ years' manufacturing experience; print industry HIGHLY preferred
  • Required: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact professionally at all levels; strong sense of direction, motivation, and organization
  • Preferred: Experience with Lean Manufacturing and BRC quality practices and audits
