     Director-Special Education Office
Position open until filled
Salary: $116,175 to $126,737 DOE (for 260 day contract)    
Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District is located approximately 35 miles north of Anchorage in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, commonly known as the “Valley” and spans nearly 25,000 square miles.  Our District is home to 49 school sites ranging in enrollments from 20 to 1,500 students.  We are the second largest school district in the State of Alaska.  Focusing on meeting the needs of Valley families, we continue our focus on academic innovation, public school choice, and excellent customer service.   
 
Class Summary:
Incumbent is responsible for the overall supervision of Special Education, Early Learning, Health Services, Mat-Su Youth Facility School, Mat-Su Day School, and Support Programs delivered through interagency agreements with local mental health and Department of Health and Social Services organizations. 
 
Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Education or closely related field 
  • State of Alaska Type B Certificate Administrator/Principal Endorsement, with endorsement in Special Education Administration, preferred OR State of Alaska Type F Certificate Special Education Administrator Endorsement AND an Alaska Type A Teaching Certificate 
  • Three years administrative level experience in special education; school administration; or any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed below. 
  • Knowledge of managerial principles and practices; applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations; principles of educational finance; instructional supervision of special education theory and practice; early learning principles; school psychology principles; speech therapy principles; occupational and physical therapy principles; mental health administration principles; negotiation and mediation principles;  budget principles.

  • Experience as a site administrator 
 
Essential Duties:
  • Supervises employees to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; and making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations. 
  • Manages and develops budgets, which support classified personnel, certified personnel, and central office administration, which includes: developing budget proposals, supervising expenditures, and maintaining associated records. 
  • Administrates Medicaid billing. 
  • Manages and develops federal entitlements and state grant programs, which includes: developing grant proposals, applying for funding, monitoring expenditures in compliance with Federal and State laws, and performing other related activities. 
  • Develops, manages, and coordinates interagency agreements and services provided through alternative programs, which includes planning, scheduling, and directing site-based behavioral health services, alternative educational placements, and/or other related services. 
  • Directs and develops assigned educational programs and related services, which includes: managing day-to-day operations, supervising staff, coordinating with external agencies, and performing other related activities. 
  • Develops recruitment plans; schedules and represents the District at national job fairs; conducts interviews. 
  • Serves as a representative for the district in a variety of capacities, which includes: special education legal cases, union contract negotiations, disciplinary appeals labor grievances, internal investigations, and/or other related situations. 
  • Management of Section 504. 
  • Management of Early Learning programs. 
  • Management of Health Services.   
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. 
Salary and Benefits:
  • Salary of $123,250 - $ 134,456 DOE – 260 day contract
  • District benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance of $150,000  
  • State of Alaska Teachers Retirement Benefits (not a Social Security Employer)  
  • 36 days of personal leave and 15.96 days of sick leave, annually
