Overview

The Agency of Transportation (AOT/VTrans) is hiring for multiple summer opportunities. These roles assist in fields related to transportation engineering. See descriptions below for more information. 

 

College students are encouraged to apply and VTrans can offer flexibility in terms of start and end dates and summer scheduling. As part of your application, please indicate which specific fields you are interested in.

 

Survey – An AOT Technical Apprentice within the Survey Unit performs land surveying duties under the supervision of the Agency's licensed Land Surveyor. Working alongside our two field crews, a Tech is responsible for performing survey field work, total station/GPS/GNSS instrument operation, CADD file creation, editing, and analysis, field reconnaissance, 3D terrestrial LiDAR scanning.

 

Rail Trail – Working alongside two field technicians and independently, the Tech is responsible for performing routine trail maintenance such as clearing drainage structures, cutting blowdowns, trimming overgrowth, and installing signs; completing GIS based asset inventories and reporting conditions to field leadership; and assisting with trail user education which typically occurs through informal interactions over the course of the workday. Techs should be prepared to provide information about the Rail Trails and explain relevant trail etiquette. The position will report to the West Danville field office but will cover trails statewide.

These are temporary positions. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. May be required on occasion to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded and/or steep terrain, or travel in boats. Field work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions. Duties may require exposure to extreme weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) or more years of college coursework in engineering, construction management, or related field.
OR
Two (2) or more years of work experience in civil, construction, or environmental engineering, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Coursework or in engineering, construction management, or related technical field.

Special Requirements

A current, valid driver's license is required, and transportation may be required for field assignments.
