The Role:
If you are passionate about fostering voluntary compliance and ensuring a fair taxation system, this role is perfect for you! The Vermont Department of Taxes Compliance Division is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to join us as an Audit Manager. In this exciting position, you will supervise three audit sections within the Compliance Division, closely collaborate with the Director and Assistant Director of Compliance and play a key role in setting the Division's priorities and projects. This opportunity is based in our main office in Montpelier.
Our department's mission is to ensure timely and efficient collection of the appropriate tax revenue needed to fund state government services and goods. This role involves utilizing big data, understanding Vermont and federal tax laws, and applying business and accounting expertise to detect and address instances where taxes are not voluntarily reported and paid. The individual in this role will lead the implementation and completion of audit programs, manage audit case assignments and outcomes, evaluate the return on investment (ROI) of these programs, assess and address the training needs of audit staff, and identify opportunities for educational outreach
The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of federal and Vermont tax laws and regulations enforced by the Department. They should be self-driven, collaborative, organized, curious, and open-minded. We seek someone who excels in both written and verbal communication and is candid in their interactions.

Hybrid Telework Schedule
Our department embraces the benefits of both telework and in-person collaboration. This position is required to be in the office at least one day a week on Wednesdays. The Tax Department permits eligible employees to request voluntary participation in the State of Vermont Telework program. Telework eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis and is consistent with State and Department policies. Department employees are currently required to participate in one weekly “core day” (currently Wednesdays) and must plan to report for work at 133 State Street, Montpelier. Depending on business needs, there may be additional days when employees are expected to report to the Tax Department's central offices, even if they are approved to participate in the telework program.

Duties are performed independently from central office setting. Travel may be required. Some audit situations may assume a somewhat adversarial nature, requiring significant tact and persistence to complete a successful audit or resolution of a dispute or appeal. Pressure from work deadlines is predictable. Multitasking and setting priorities is required.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree or higher in accounting, public or business administration, public policy or a related field AND three (3) or more years experience in administration, accounting, auditing or in business administration involving fiscal management AND two (2) or more years of supervisory experience.
OR
Five (5) or more years' experience in administration, accounting, auditing or in business administration involving fiscal management AND three (3) or more years of supervisory experience.
