Overview

Data Visualization and Analytics Professional
 
As part of the Vermont Center for Geographic Information (VCGI) team, this position serves as a technical expert in data visualization and analytics, responsible for transforming complex datasets into interactive dashboards, applications, and clear, intuitive reports. Working with a high degree of autonomy, you will collaborate across multiple state agencies, using strong communication skills to translate technical concepts for diverse stakeholders and design high-profile data products that make critical information accessible and actionable for leadership and the public. This role requires flexibility and a willingness to embrace new technologies, incorporating advanced programming, modern BI platforms, and data science methodologies to build intelligent pipelines and analytical models that optimize state operations over time.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Data Design & Architecture: Strong understanding of relational and non-relational database design, data modeling techniques, and schema optimization specifically tailored for high-performance data visualization and spatial analysis.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Engagement: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical and analytical concepts into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders, agency leadership, and the public. Proven experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
  • UI/UX Design for Data Products: Knowledge of User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) best practices to design intuitive, accessible, and user-centric dashboards and applications.
  • Data Pipeline & ETL/ELT Development: Experience building, automating, and maintaining data pipelines and workflows using modern tools to ensure data integrity and optimize operations.
  • Visual Design & Data Storytelling: Mastery of visual hierarchy, typography, data-to-ink ratios, and color theory to create compelling, high-profile data products that tell a clear story and minimize cognitive load for the end user.
  • Cloud Platforms: Proficiency with major cloud computing environments (e.g., Azure/ AWS).
  • Ability & Willingness to Utilize AI: Capability and openness to responsibly leverage generative AI and machine learning tools to accelerate code development, automate repetitive data cleaning tasks, troubleshoot complex bugs, and prototype.

 

A fingerprint-supported background check may be required based on the assigned job duties and location.

 

As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 26 will be $33.53 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $52.55 per hour.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in a standard office setting and there is considerable interaction with users and members of project teams requiring some tact and diplomacy to balance competing views. Work outside of regular work schedule can be anticipated.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science AND two (2) or more years of experience in computer or network support, programming or analysis, or database administration.

 

OR

 

Associate's degree in computer science or college-level coursework that includes 15 computer science credits AND four (4) or more years of experience in computer or network support, programming or analysis, or database administration.

 

OR

 

Six (6) or more years of experience in computer or network support, programming or analysis, or database administration.
