The Vermont Department of Taxes' Compliance Division offers a stimulating opportunity for a motivated and dynamic person to work as a data analyst and to help develop and help manage discovery programs used to find compliance opportunities.


Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Write queries to pull relevant data help vet ideas for audit programs, work to evaluate data, and then develop, execute, and document programs and campaigns. Responsible for developing and maintaining an internal control program, including policy and procedures to insure the efficiency and effectiveness of the newly implemented programs, and to provide assurance of legal and regulatory compliance
  • Leverage big data, have knowledge of Vermont and federal tax law, and knowledge of business and accounting practices to identify and address areas where those taxes are not being reported and paid on a voluntary basis
  • Extract and analyze data to determine if outcomes have been met, design reports using a variety of reporting and analysis tools, and work with staff to establish optimal compliance solutions.

 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be self-motivated, analytical, curious and open minded. 
  • Knowledge of programming techniques using tools such as SQL.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools such as Excel
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to understand compliance objectives.
  • Ability to research and understand nuances of complex tax law and accounting practices
  • Understanding Relational Database Design
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.

About the Compliance Division 


The Compliance Division is responsible for promoting and ensuring Vermont taxpayer compliance, with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. We value service, integrity, and employee growth, as we aim to support Vermont communities effectively and efficiently. Our team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection officers, and support staff.


Background Checks
This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Incumbents should anticipate some stressful situations and strong differences of opinion with taxpayers and/or their representatives. Workload will vary but remain heavy.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, statistics, business administration, project management or information technology management.

 

OR

 

Associate's degree in accounting, statistics, business administration, project management, or information technology management AND four (4) years or more of professional level experience in business analysis or business administration INCLUDING two (2) years or more of business process creation or project management.

 

OR

 

High school diploma or equivalent AND six (6) years or more of professional level experience in business analysis or business administration INCLUDING four (4) years or more of business process creation or project management.

 

OR

 

Certification as a CPA or RPA.
