Join our team and support the growth of our South Africa-based energy practice. As an Energy Sector Analyst / Associate / Senior Associate in power systems and planning, you will contribute to various aspects of technical analysis, project management, and business development within the energy sector. The specific position level (Analyst, Associate, Senior Associate) and associated job description will be determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience. Will support the growth of our South Africa–based energy practice. This will include supporting studies related to grid integration and stability, support with preparing reports. The analyst will also support business development efforts, support senior staff with technical analyses, support with the writing of expressions of interest. The position will involve occasional travel to international locations to execute technical tasks in collaboration with local project personnel, project stakeholders, and clients.

Position responsibilities
- Conduct power system analyses covering load flow, short circuit, dynamic and transient stability, harmonics, protection, arc flash, electromagnetic transient switching, and insulation coordination studies.
- Assist in power system modeling using software such as PSS/E, DigSilent PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD, and EMTDC.
- Contribute to the modeling of battery storage, wind, and solar PV generation, including master controllers.
- Support automated power system simulation studies using scripting tools like Python.
- Analyze and interpret simulation and test data, providing insights as needed.
- Provide research and data collection for report and presentation production.
- Collaborate with experts from other Tetra Tech operating units under senior team guidance.
- Draft technical inputs for business development and marketing efforts.
- Occasionally travel internationally to collect data from utilities, control centers, substations, and project sites.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (e.g., BSc or BEng)
- Associate: Two years of relevant work experience in system planning and modelling
- Senior Associate: Five years of relevant work experience in energy system planning, studies and modelling
- Proficiency in Python programming language
- Advanced IT literacy and numeracy skills
- Ability to tackle complex technical problems with a systematic approach
- Adaptable, able to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong relationship-building skills
- Detail-oriented and deadline-driven
- Willingness to learn and undertake training
- Occasional international travel required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Valued qualifications
- Postgraduate degree (e.g., MSc, MEng, or PhD)
- Previous technical experience in the energy sector
- Commercial awareness
- Proficiency in French
Physical demands & work environment
- Remote setting, with an estimated 20 percent of time in regional and international travel
