Position Summary
The Senior Associate will support the growth of our South Africa–based energy practice. This will include independently conducting studies related to grid integration and stability, carrying out site measurements, performing technical analyses and analyzing and preparing client reports that meet specified terms of reference. The role also requires proactive efforts for business development.
This is a full-time position and will report to the Senior Director in South Africa.
Essential Job Functions
Technical
- Lead power system analysis, including load flow, short circuit, dynamic and transient stability, harmonics, protection, arc flash, electromagnetic transient switching and insulation coordination studies.
- Independently conduct power system modeling using software such as PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD, and EMTDC.
- Independently conduct governor and AVR modeling including user-defined models.
- Autonomously carry out modeling of battery storage, wind and solar PV generation including master controllers.
- Independently undertake SVC, SCO and STATCOM modeling.
- Autonomously execute inverter models including grid-forming inverters in consulting assignments.
- Perform automated power system simulation studies using scripting tools such as Python.
- Lead the modelling of HVDC interconnectors for feasibility studies and performance specifications
- Independently analyze and interpret simulation and test data.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Project Management
- Lead the preparation of reports and presentations to clients.
- Interact and coordinate with experts from other Tetra Tech operating units, as necessary.
- Interact with clients, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Prepare and review technical responses for tendering purposes.
- May serve as Home Office Project Manager or support management of small/medium sized projects, to achieve financial targets.
- Appraise the work carried out by Analysts, Associates and other engineers.
- Cross train & knowledge share with peers.
Business Development
- Lead the preparation of proposals in collaboration with the Business development team
- Provide support in drafting expressions of interest, proposal content and high-quality technical inputs.
- Share content through social media and attend conferences & network at events as marketing efforts.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering such as BSc or BEng
- Five years of relevant work experience in energy system planning, studies and modelling
- Knowledge of Python programming language
- Advanced IT literacy and numeracy skills
- Ability to return to first principles and academic literature to resolve complex technical problems.
- Adaptable and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Able to confidently build and maintain external and internal relationships.
- A systematic, logical approach to problem solving.
- Detail-oriented and careful approach to completing assignments.
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively to meet deadlines and client needs.
- Highly motivated to learn on the job, interface with clients, and undertake training.
- Proficiency in both spoken and written English
- Proficiency in the MS Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams
- Strong research capabilities, using a variety of primary and secondary sources.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate degrees such as MSc, MEng, or PhD
- Experience in technical role within energy sector
- Experience in creating and managing budgets
- Proficiency in both spoken and written French
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer
Work Environment / Schedule
- Work schedule: Monday – Friday, standard core business hours (8:30 AM – 5:30 PM local time); some flexibility require
- The position is fully remote; flexible hours but must overlap core business hours for team collaboration.
- Travel requirements: Travel internationally up with an estimated 20% of time to visit utilities, national control centers, substations, project sites and power plants to collect data, via measurements, as necessary.
