Tetra Tech is currently seeking a full-time, Analytical or Environmental Chemist for our Denver, CO office to provide method development for a mobile laboratory, operate gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) equipment in mobile laboratory, and participate in the Emergency Response program as needed.
The selected candidate will provide analytical chemistry-related support for environmental projects involving federal, tribal, state, local, and private clients. You will assist with the development of EPA SW-846 methods for analysis by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/MS. You will:
• Support preparation of and technical writing for reports, letter reports, remedial investigation reports, monthly progress reports, standard operating procedures, and more.
• Prepare other various technical deliverables including databases, proposals, cost estimates, tables, and figures.
• Work collaboratively with and under the supervision of a project or program manager.
• Work collaboratively with a team of experienced chemists, scientists, and engineers who provide data validation services to clients across the company.
• Interact with Tetra Tech offices nationwide, and interact with subcontractors, stakeholders, and clients.
Additionally, you may:
• Support environmental emergency response activities; field investigations (involving soil, sediment, water, and air sampling); coordination with analytical laboratories; and data planning, collection, and evaluation.
• Provide task and project management support, including procurement and oversight of subcontract laboratories.
• Be responsible for conducting up to Stage 4 data validation and data quality assessments.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have at least five (5) years relevant experience in conducting analysis of organic compounds using EPA SW-846 methods. Specifically, you will have:
• Experience with field analysis and analytical laboratory operations. This includes: performing preparatory and analytical procedures associated with gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods, such as EPA SW-846 Methods 8015, 8081, 8082, 8260, 8270, or equivalent methods; performing preparatory and analytical procedures associated with inorganic SW-846 Methods 6010, 6020, 7470, and 7471; using portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers; using commercially available semi-quantitative field screening methods; conducting routine maintenance of analytical equipment and instruments; and conducting laboratory operations such as using laboratory balances; preparing calibration standards, internal standards, surrogate or deuterated monitoring compound standards, and laboratory quality control (QC) samples; and conducting instrument calibrations.
• Thorough knowledge and experience in the analysis of organic compounds by EPA SW-846 method 8260 (volatile organic compounds), EPA SW-846 method 8270 (semi-volatile organic compounds), and EPA SW846 method 8015 (gasoline, diesel, and oil range organics).
• Requires the ability to troubleshoot instrumentation, interpret chromatograms and mass spectra in support of target analyte interpretation and understand all quality control requirements associated with sample analysis.
• Proficiency in interpreting field and laboratory analytical data and preparation of technical reports.
• Experience in laboratory analysis is required.
• Ability to interface with clients, subcontractors, working groups, and internal customers is required. Must be able to communicate effectively and make evaluated decisions for the betterment of the client and the company.
• Strong writing skills are critical.
• Flexible and able to manage multiple demands successfully.
The following items are preferred:
• Experience preparing technical reports, memos, response to comments tables, data tables, and figures.
• Experience conducting data validation of the analysis of samples.
• Field chemistry and field sample collection for site investigations and emergency response efforts.
• Relevant field experience: collecting environmental samples across all media (soil, sediment, water, waste, and air); and the proper preservation, handling, and shipping of environmental samples to laboratories.
• Experience reviewing and managing environmental data and databases using software such as Microsoft Access or R.
In addition, the following is required:

Degree / Certifications
• BS/BA degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline is required.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Training preferred but not necessary.
Work Environment
The work environment will be a mix of field and office work. The candidate must be able to work in the field 20% of the time. You must be able to
• Work on a computer in an office environment for office-based tasks.
• Work beyond traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, in order to meet client deadlines.
• Prolong walking and/or standing during field work when necessary.
• Work outdoor during all seasons, both hot and cold, in all weather conditions.
• Walk on various terrains.
• Lift and carry field equipment (35 to 40 pounds) required.
• Meet physical demands of hazardous waste site work.
• Don personal protective gear as needed.
• Drive on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required.
The Salary Range for this position is $58,000 - $72,000, depending on education, experience, skills, and location.
