The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding an On-Call (hourly) Field Biologist to support our established and growing Hawaiian Islands team. The primary responsibility of this position is performing biological surveys and analysis to evaluate biological resources associated with various development and environmental projects across the Hawaiian Islands. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in threatened and endangered species surveys, wildlife/avian identification, plant identification, bat acoustic monitoring, and habitat assessments. This position involves a mixture of field work, data interpretation, and technical writing.

Your Role:

  • Conduct wildlife, avian, botanical, and habitat surveys across a variety of environments.
  • Perform plant and bird identification, insect assessments, bat acoustic surveys, vegetation community classifications, and listed species detection.
  • Synthesize and interpret biological data to support impact evaluation on ecological resources.
  • Coordinate biology field tasks, logistics, schedules, and data quality assurance.
  • Prepare field survey documentation and technical reports.
  • Support development of biological resource impact analyses.
  • Support compliance with project permit conditions and regulatory frameworks including:
    • Endangered Species Act (ESA)
    • National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
    • Hawai‘i Environmental Policy Act (HEPA)
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, clients, and project stakeholders.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in biological sciences, botany, ecology, environmental science, wildlife biology, or similar field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct field survey experience in the Hawaiian Islands.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify Hawaiian flora and fauna, including listed or rare species.
  • Experience using field data collection tools such as ArcGIS Field Maps, Garmin, Trimble, etc.
  • Ability to conduct physically demanding field work (hiking, remote access, rugged terrain) in various weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel between islands for assignments.
  • Strong writing, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Resident of the State of Hawai‘i.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in environmental consulting.
  • Experience conducting NEPA / HEPA analyses and supporting regulatory documentation.
  • Familiarity with natural resource assessments and conservation planning.
  • Experience supporting biological impact and mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian ecosystems and cultural landscape sensitivities.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to hike and traverse remote field sites.
  • Ability to safely carry necessary field equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or conduct field tasks for extended periods.

 

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Field work may occur in rugged terrain, dense vegetation, windy or rainy conditions, and high-sun exposure.
  • Field assignments may involve multi-day or multi-island travel.
  • Work schedule may vary depending on project and environmental survey conditions (including early mornings / evenings when wildlife activity is highest).

  • This is an on-call, hourly position.
  • Workload will vary depending on project timelines and survey schedules.
  • Flexibility and adaptability are important given environmental and logistical conditions associated with Hawai‘i-based field work.

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $26.00 – $42.00 hourly

  

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
