Your Role:

We're seeking a seasoned Geotechnical Department Manager to lead, grow and oversee our established geotechnical engineering program. Reporting to senior leadership out of our Pittsburgh office, you will manage a diverse portfolio of Energy, Renewable Energy, Mining, Oil & Gas and Site Development projects while mentoring and developing a team of geotechnical professionals. You will also cultivate client relationships and work closely with project engineers and project managers to ensure technical excellence, on-time delivery and continued program improvement.

  • Lead day-to-day operations of the geotechnical engineering program, ensuring consistent quality, safety and compliance across all projects.
  • Maintain and refine existing geotechnical investigation practices, laboratory testing protocols, and program documentation.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager to evolve workflows, standards and resource plans.
  • Serve as a primary technical and strategic point of contact for key clients, anticipating their needs and ensuring their satisfaction.
  • Proactively identify and pursue opportunities to expand services with existing clients and to win new business.
  • Participate in proposal preparation and presentations to secure and grow client engagement.
  • Oversee planning, execution and reporting of field investigations, including drilling, sampling, in-situ testing and instrumentation.
  • Provide hands-on geotechnical design and analysis for foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, and site development.
  • Review and interpret laboratory data, ensuring that analytical results support sound engineering recommendations.
  • Coordinate with lead project engineers and project managers to align technical scope, schedule and budget.
  • Supervise and mentor geotechnical engineers and field technicians, fostering professional growth.
  • Allocate resources, set performance goals and conduct regular progress reviews.
  • Lead training initiatives on emerging technologies, analytical methods, and best practices.
  • Develop clear, concise work plans, technical reports and design memoranda.
  • Review and approve deliverables to maintain high standards of technical accuracy and client satisfaction.
  • Contribute to proposal development, including scope definition, cost estimating and technical narrative.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing and onboarding of engineering staff and field personnel.
  • Monitor staffing needs, skill sets, and workload balance to meet project demands.
  • Provide geotechnical support during construction, including site visits, testing oversight, and interpretation of field observations.
  • Address contractor inquiries and resolve technical issues in real time. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in civil/Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in PA (or ability to obtain).
  • 10+ years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience, including leadership roles.
  • Proven success managing multi-disciplinary teams and complex programs.
  • Strong technical aptitude in soil mechanics, foundation design and site development.
  • Excellent communication, client development and project management skills.
  • Candidate must be highly motivated; customers focused and work well in a team environment.
  • Candidate must also be able to manage and lead project tasks effectively while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Experience in geotechnical engineering design and modeling software.
  • Candidate must be able and available for travel via land and/or air and possess a valid drivers' license in good standing.
  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
