Summary:

Tetra Tech, Inc. is seeking a senior level Geoscientist/Geologist experienced in project management, geotechnical evaluations, groundwater and mine pool monitoring, environmental assessments, proposal preparation, job and budget tracking, technical report preparation, and client development for mining, abandoned mine reclamation, brownfields, renewable energy, natural gas, and other environmental projects. 

This position will provide expertise related to the practice of geology for the OGA Mining Group.  The successful candidate will be expected to provide technical expertise, project planning and development, project management, mentoring, and business development/marketing services primarily in support of mining, abandoned mine reclamation, mine drainage treatment/abatement projects, oil and gas, brownfields, alternative/renewable energy projects, and other environmental projects.  An understanding of the geology of Appalachian coal seams and the associated mining techniques (both surface and underground) will be beneficial.  Experience in mining, the oil and gas, or environmental industry is a plus.

The work will primarily be located in Kentucky but could include projects in surrounding states such as Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.  The candidate should have a fundamental understanding and working knowledge of environmental rules and regulations in Kentucky.

The successful candidate will manage or work on a variety of environmental permitting/site investigation / remediation projects and site investigations at industrial / commercial sites and / or government installations and conduct site assessment for real estate transactions.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform work activities and project management with minimal supervision and review of work except for QA/QC reviews.  

Duties will include overseeing and, in some cases, performing routine field and office assignments (technical and non-technical) including planning, conducting, and reporting on field investigations involving abandoned mine (AML) sites, active mine sites, well installations, soil and groundwater sampling, aquifer testing and hydrogeology.

Duties may also include working with stakeholders; watershed groups; landowners; federal, state, and local government officials; and other Tetra Tech staff with diverse technical backgrounds to plan, develop or otherwise facilitate mine reclamation, AMD treatment and/or abatement projects, and other projects with geologic, hydrogeologic, or geotechnical components. 

Projects may be conducted under a variety of regulatory programs (Oil and Gas, AML and Mining, Underground Storage Tanks, Brownfields) primarily in Kentucky and surrounding states. 

Your Role:

  • Project management of projects with geological and/or geotechnical components including mining, abandoned mine reclamation, oil and gas, brownfields, renewable energy, and other environmental projects.
  • Oversight of projects and staff completing field activities including drill inspection and logging, sampling various environmental matrices and wastes, monitoring well installations, Phase I ESAs, data collection analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to interact with state and federal agencies personnel.
  • Prepare geological and geotechnical reports including maps, charts, boring logs, cross-sections depicting subsurface conditions.
  • Operate computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite and necessary geologic or geotechnical software.
  • Oversee and/or perform field testing using equipment and instrumentation.
  • Prepare detailed reports including geological and geotechnical analysis for both internal use and for external clients.
  • Review and or prepare field reports, internal correspondence, sections of final reports, and regulatory reporting.
  • Oversee subcontractors and / or other company employees in the field.
  • Prepare health and safety plans / job hazard analyses and follow company / site safety standards.
  • Contact vendors for product information and/or quotes.
  • Research technical papers/literature and regulatory requirements as necessary.

Additional project management responsibilities may include:

  • Overseeing, conducting, and/or reviewing sample collection and data using various sampling methods including hand auger, bailers, pumps and low flow sampling techniques.
  • Ensuring field staff are maintaining and calibrating field equipment and instruments.
  • Reviewing work of field staff to ensure accurate documentation of field conditions, field measurements, sample custody, compliance with client safety requirements including donning client specified personal protective equipment and routine drug screening.

Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in Geology with twenty or more years of experience is required. 
  • Registration as a Professional Geologist in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is required. 
  • Registration in other states is a plus. 
  • OSHA – 40-hour HAZWOPER training is required.
  • MSHA Part 48 certification is beneficial but not required. 
  • Must have demonstrated ability in conducting or overseeing field data collection and analysis and demonstrated technical writing capability. 
  • A minimum of fifteen years of experience in environmental consulting or related experience required. 
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations preferred. 
  • Strong oral and written communication/interpersonal skills are a must. 
  • Additional qualifications such as OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Certification and First Aid/CPR/AED training will be viewed favorably.
  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
