Summary of Job Duties: The Advanced Practice Nurse/Physician Assistant (APRN/PA) will be a vital member of the Advanced Endoscopy team within the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). This provider will assist physicians with clinic operations, organize patient visits, and perform clinic procedures. They will also serve as a high-level clinical extender, working both independently and collaboratively with supervising physicians to manage patient care across inpatient and outpatient settings. The APRN/PA will perform clinical assessments, assist with care coordination, answer MyChart and in-basket messages, respond to patient questions and phone calls, and manage prescriptions. They will conduct inpatient rounds, complete consults and follow-ups, coordinate procedures, and facilitate transitions of care. In the outpatient clinic (2 half-days per week), they will see patients pre- and post-procedure, follow up on pathology and imaging, and ensure patients receive comprehensive education and appropriate follow-up. The provider must possess a high level of clinical expertise to assess, diagnose, and treat actual and potential problems in patients undergoing complex GI procedures such as EUS, ERCP, EMR, and ESD. The APRN/PA will serve as a key communicator between the care team and patients, ensuring timely, complete, and accurate information sharing.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

APRN:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing

  • Three years of nursing experience

  • Acute Care Certification

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in Arkansas

  • APRN License

PA:

  • Masters Education

  • PA Licensure


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

Inpatient (5 days/week):

  • Round daily on inpatients who have undergone or are scheduled for advanced endoscopic procedures. · Perform and document inpatient consults and follow-up visits in coordination with the attending advanced endoscopist. 

  • Communicate consult findings and recommendations to the referring teams and ensure continuity of care. 

  • Coordinate the timing and logistics of procedures with endoscopy, radiology, anesthesia, and other teams as needed. 

  • Monitor lab results, imaging, and clinical status; escalate issues to the attending when necessary. 

Outpatient Clinic (2 half-days/week): 

  • Evaluate and manage new and follow-up patients in the Advanced Endoscopy Clinic under the supervision of a physician. 

  • Conduct pre-procedure assessments, including review of history, medications, and surgical risk. · Review pathology and imaging results with patients and initiate appropriate next steps based on physician guidance. 

  • Provide education to patients and families regarding procedures, preparation, post-procedure expectations, and follow-up care. 

  • Facilitate smooth care transitions between outpatient and inpatient settings when necessary. 

  • Ensure patients are appropriately scheduled for procedures, follow-up visits, imaging, and labs. 

  • Provide timely responses to MyChart messages and phone calls related to the advanced endoscopy service.

  • Track and follow up on pathology results, imaging studies, and specialty referrals.

  • Coordinate with nursing staff, schedulers, and support services to ensure procedure instructions are received and understood by patients.

  • Collaborate with the administrative team to help optimize scheduling templates and workflow efficiencies. 

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to advanced endoscopy (e.g., post-procedure complication tracking, patient education material development, patient satisfaction).

  • Assist in developing standardized protocols for pre- and post-procedure workflows.

  • Participate in case conferences, morbidity & mortality reviews, and academic discussions.

  • Other duties as assigned.
