Seeking a dedicated Library Assistant IV to lead departmental training, manage student hiring and onboarding within Access Services, and support the daily operations of our public service desks.
The Trainer & Student Coordinator plays a key role in maintaining smooth and effective library services, with primary responsibility for supervising all student workers during their assigned shifts.
This position staffs the supervisor desk at designated times and oversees both staff members and student workers stationed at the service desks during those periods. They also serve as the supervisor in charge on Saturdays and work closely with the daytime manager and department head to coordinate student worker scheduling each semester.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of three years of relevant experience in a library setting; or any comparable combination of education, supervisory training or experience, and practical experience may be considered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
- Supervise library staff members and student workers at three service desks.
- Train, oversee, and evaluate the performance of student workers.
- Design and deliver career development training programs to enhance student worker skills and workplace readiness.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations and one-on-one check-ins to support student worker growth and accountability.
- Oversee the library building on Saturdays, serving as the primary point of contact for operational, staffing, and security-related matters.
- Monitor library security gates and cameras on Saturdays and while at the supervisor's desk, ensuring proper building access and responding promptly to any security-related incidents.
- Serve as backup for Access Services staff during scheduling gaps, ensuring continued coverage and support at service points as needed.
- Serve as one of the primary trainers for new Access Services staff, ensuring consistent onboarding and comprehensive training.
- Act as a primary point of contact for library patrons, offering support and guidance while clearly communicating library policies and procedures.
- Ensure efficient workflow and quality customer service at service desks.
- Utilize in-depth knowledge of library systems to manage material circulation and service delivery.
- Support patrons in locating materials and navigating the library's digital resources.
- Address and resolve patron account inquiries and issues.
- Address patron concerns with professionalism, empathy, and a calm, solutions-oriented approach.
- Maintain records, compile statistics, and complete special projects as assigned.
- Communicate relevant issues promptly and effectively to the department head, daytime manager, and fellow supervisors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student employees, ensuring they receive the support and guidance needed to succeed in their roles.
- Design and deliver career development workshops and training sessions to foster the professional growth of student workers.
- Promote open and effective communication between student workers, the broader student community, and library staff, cultivating a collaborative, service-oriented environment.
- Serve as one of two lead trainers for onboarding new full-time Access Services staff, providing comprehensive orientation and instruction.
- Maintain consistency in departmental onboarding practices and procedural training to support operational excellence and continuity.
Additional Information
Work Notice:
Work will be performed on-site and in person. This position follows a Tuesday – Saturday schedule from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with possible seasonal adjustments during the Winter and Summer months to reflect changes in library hours.
