The WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital podiatric medicine and surgery residency is a training program accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) for post-graduate training in podiatric medicine and surgery as well all medicine and surgery specialties to comply with requirements set forth in the CPME 320 document, Standards and Requirements for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies. The scope of resident duties falls within their level of training and competence.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Formal Education: Completed podiatric medical school and possesses a valid DPM degree.
Additional relevant experience/education or certification required:
1. Completes application for residency and meets CPME and program criteria for selection.
2. Successfully completes pre-requisites for starting the residency program including ACLS training, pre-employment physician, and drug screen.
3. Residents are not members of the medical staff and have no admitting privileges. While on rotations, residents work under the supervision of the attending physician to whom the patient is admitted. The attending physician must be a licensed independent practitioner (LIP) and hold clinical privileges that reflect the patient care responsibilities given to the resident
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Participates in prescribed set of monthly rotations. Meets the goals and performs duties as outlined in each rotation.
2. Performs daily patient care duties with the assistance and supervision of the attending physician; participates in daily rounds on patients assigned to the resident, assists in making treatment decisions, writes orders, and writes
progress notes and other entries in the medical record.
3. Notifies the attending physician about every admission and reviews orders during the day or when on call.
4. Performs the history and physical exam. Writes admission orders. Writes progress notes.
5. Performs a certain number of procedures in order to become proficient as outlined in the CPME 320 (an attending physician who precepts procedures must hold clinical privileges for that procedure). (Surgical procedures performed in the operating suite require the physical presence of the attending surgeon for direct supervision during the procedure).
6. Completes medical records in a timely manner (most medical record entries do not require countersignature by the attending physician).
7. Provides ongoing care to a panel of patients. Residents are expected to see minimum numbers of patients in accordance with CPME 320 guidelines. Residents should make arrangements for coverage by fellow residents when necessary.
8. Performs on-call responsibilities that vary depending on rotation assignment and level of training.
9. Attends didactic experiences including lectures, journal club, radiology rounds, and hands-on labs and maintains acceptable levels of attendance.
10. Performs all other duties as assigned.
